Z Magnette Group of North America welcomes a favorite Brit
by Allen Bachelder
This story begins with a friendship that began over 20 years ago. It seems that Grant Howlett, of Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, had taken up residence in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States in order to further to extend his development of five-star hotels to North America. It so happened that Grant was custodian of a priceless automotive treasure: his late grandfather’s 1955 MG ZA Magnette, purchased new. Readers of Safety Fast are doubtless familiar with this distinctive, incredibly-maintained, unrestored totally original car – probably the best example of its kind in the world. And it’s driven – regularly!

Lou Shorten Tribute weekend, 1-2 October 2016
As is now traditional, our final event of the year took place at Norwich over the weekend of 1st & 2nd October, and as usual there was a good turnout of people and cars. This year marked the second ‘Lou Shorten tribute weekend’, so it was very fitting that so many people once again returned to Lenwade which Lou together with husband John had made the spiritual home of the Z Magnette for over 50 years.

Stockfest, 21 August 2016
Despite the strong winds & rainy weather of the previous day, the day of the MGA Twin Cam register's event on Sunday 21st August which the Magnette register were kindly invited to, turned out to be a reasonable day weather wise with the sun managing to shine through in the afternoon in particular. The decision was however taken not to put the new register gazebo up because of the unsettled conditions, but to hold its christening over until our next event at Kop Hill on 17th & 18th September.

BCLM, Wroxall and AGM - 2-3 July 2016
On Saturday morning about 12 Magnettes assembled at the Black Country Living Museum, along with a couple of other MGs and owners without their Magnettes. The day was overcast to start, with light rain, but not enough to spoil our enjoyment of the museum, which really brings to life the industrial history of the area with reconstructed buildings and machinery, populated by a ‘cast’ in period costume and appropriate accents. The tour of a real drift mine and the demonstration of chain-making by hand were particularly fascinating.
